Beer is Art is a project that engages South African youth in the booming craft beer industry in the country. The project is expansive in that it addresses several social issues: youth unemployment, youth alcoholism, and putting a new generation of South African brewers in conversation with other brewers around the globe.

Using Your Homebrew to Make Change for Your Community

Fun and Failproof Info on Sourcing Local Fruit and Botanicals
Brigid Meints (Assistant Professor and Naked Barley Breeder) will share the latest updates from her research on malting, brewing, and distilling with naked barley! She will give some background on naked barley, its potential benefits and downsides as an ingredient, and different projects that she and her collaborators have been working on to look at the effects of different protocols and varieties on malt, beer, and whiskey quality.
Founded in 2016, the Chicago Brewseum set out to be the world’s first museum dedicated to sharing stories of how beer has shaped humanity, past and present. While the concept resonated with the beer industry, the idea was not always embraced by academia or the museum field.
In this discussion, Liz Garibay shares her personal journey of fighting mainstream museum culture to present history through the lens of alcohol, how that impacted her career, and how that led to the Chicago Brewseum. She will also discuss the obstacles and successes of the organization, the importance of collaboration, and will share some new and exciting news that demonstrates how the institution has grown and evolved.
The Beautiful Connections Between Craft Beer & Craft Chocolate
Advanced Cicerone® David Nilsen, host of the Bean to Barstool beer and chocolate podcast, will walk through the basics of cacao and craft chocolate, what they have in common with craft beer and brewing, and—most importantly—how we can enjoy them together with thoughtful pairings. David is the author of Pairing Beer & Chocolate, and he’ll walk through the basics of how to pair these artisan products with delicious results.
